New York wins the Global Fashion Capital award
It’s official – New York has earned its title of the world’s fashion capital, closely followed by its main fashion rival Paris and London. The Big Apple has had a major influence on international fashion trends and is a leading center for the whole fashion industry, as well as a top center, hosting fashion events and fairs.
Paris ranks second, followed by London, whereas the fashion city Milan failed to make it in the top 10 this time. Los Angeles has also been featured in the fashion ranking in fourth place. What are some of the other top fashion cities? Barcelona, Berlin, Antwerp, Sydney, Rome, and Shanghai.
“New York City has, indeed, earned its Top Global Fashion Capital ranking through its disciplined, methodical yet creative approach to its fashion industry. This year’s rankings also demonstrate the creative energy that is emerging worldwide in terms of fashion as a job, income and wealth generator, not to mention the prestige associated with exporting your fashion sense to the world,” says Bekka Payack, the New York-based Fashion Director of the Global Language Monitor.
Fashion trends come first to New York
So, what makes New York City a leading fashion capital? It’s a place where fashion ideas and trends come first. Everything in the fashion world happens in New York. In fact, the city has over 5000 fashion showrooms, which is more than any other city in the world. At the heart of global fashion trends, New York has many talented designers and fashion retailers
Also, New York was the first capital to host the popular now fashion week. Originally called “Press Week”, fashion week was first intended for American fashion designers, who wanted to showcase their work for the fashion enthusiasts and insiders, who couldn’t travel to Paris due to the ongoing war. Nowadays, New York’s Fashion Week is the first of the four big fashion weeks, displaying the work of designers from all over the world in a period of 7-9 days. Last but not least, you may have heard of the fashion center of the city – 5th Avenue, where major New York City designers opened their flagship design store.
A major reason for the trends to arrive first in New York is the presence of the Broadway shows. According to industry experts the influence of Broadway is enormous. “People try to imitate Broadway actors and wear the same garments they do” says Nina Grave from Playbill.
Never-ending fashion competition
Fashion cities are continuously competing for the first place as a leading fashion capital worldwide. For the time being, the title is held by New York City, but it has also belonged to Paris, London, and other fashion cities. Each city has its own unique fashion style, contributing to the leading fashion tendencies in the world.
